Episode 85 - Taking Charge After a Controversial Leader
It’s hard to deal with a controversial past while moving forward. You want to clarify that things will be different, but you also don’t want to ignore the past or forget about those who made the organization great in the first place. The most common solution is for new leaders just completely erase everything from their predecessors. This way, they can pretend like he/she never existed and start fresh without any baggage weighing them down.
However, this approach doesn't acknowledge what happened before and can leave people feeling betrayed or even bitter towards new leadership if bad decisions or scandals are involved. A better option is acknowledging your predecessor's contributions while at the same time making it clear that you are taking steps today so these mistakes won't happen again tomorrow.
This week on Q&A on Breakthrough Leadership, Louis Quinto and Craig P. Anderson - Leadership Confidence Coach discuss how you can lead successfully in the wake of a controversial leader.
